Thomas M. Dunlap

I am a founding partner at Dunlap Bennett & Ludwig, a veteran-owned law firm with more than 75 attorneys across the nation. My background includes serving as a prosecutor and Army officer, and I bring extensive litigation experience to my practice. Over the years, I’ve achieved significant victories, such as a $31 million patent jury verdict and multiple successful Federal Circuit appeals. My work focuses on intellectual property law, government contracts, patents, and trademarks, and I currently act as outside counsel for both the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Commonwealth of Virginia. I hold a JD, MBA, and an MS in Biotechnology, and I’m also an inventor with multiple patents, including one for technology used in COVID testing. I’ve been recognized in Chambers (Band 2), the WTR 1000 as a leading trademark lawyer, and have been named a DC and Virginia Super Lawyer for over a decade. My practical experience includes formerly serving as the CEO and founder of Ceres Nanosciences, and I share my knowledge as an adjunct professor at Washington & Lee University and Lafayette College, where I teach intellectual property law. Outside of the courtroom and classroom, I enjoy a variety of pursuits. I’m a PADI Master Diver, an instrument pilot, a saber fencer, and I’ve earned a silver medal in Burmese National Kickboxing. At Dunlap Bennett & Ludwig, I focus on intellectual property, artificial intelligence, and government contracts, handling contracts, transactions, and disputes. I’ve successfully litigated state and federal jury trials, preliminary injunctions, summary judgment motions, bid protests, and appeals, including a precedential $31 million patent jury verdict in the Eastern District of Texas and a $2.6 million counter-claim jury verdict in Loudoun County. My appellate work includes six Federal Circuit cases and three arguments before the United States Supreme Court.
