Driving when Trucks are on the Road - Attorney Harry Rothenberg Esq.Hi, I'm Harry Rothenberg from The Rothenberg Law Firm. Remember back when if you wanted to go shopping, you had to go shopping. You had to get in your car to go to the store. Now you can order just about anything over the Internet while wearing your boxer shorts and eating popcorn on your couch. It's incredibly convenient. But the items you order have to make it to your house, which means that somewhere along the way there is going to be a truck involved to ship the items. More online orders means more shipping, which means more trucks, which means more trucking accidents. From the perspective of the trucking companies, the more miles driven, the greater the profits. But that also means that truck drivers need to drive more hours and that's one of the biggest dangers that other drivers face. Truck drivers are often pressured by their employers. They're tired or bored or distracted. And they're often driving unsafe trucks, turning those trucks into giant weapons on the road. Except for extreme weather conditions, the most dangerous thing on a road or highway is a large truck. When a truck hits a car, the truck wins. In a collision involving a truck, it is almost always the driver or passenger of the other vehicle who gets seriously injured, or killed, not the truck driver. Unfortunately, many if not most trucking companies do not have enough insurance coverage to compensate the victims injured or killed in a crash. The federal government requires certain minimum levels of insurance for trucking companies. But those minimum levels for trucking companies have not been raised for many many years due to pressure from trucking companies. And although there are rules and laws that regulate driver and truck safety, drivers and companies that violate the rules are usually let off with just a slap on the wrist. And that's why the minority of bad truck drivers and unsafe companies cause the majority of collisions on the road. I happen to live near the New Jersey Turnpike; which like many highways has a long section with two choices for travel. One set of lanes is for cars only, and one is for cars, trucks, and buses. The cars, trucks, and buses lane is almost always better for cars because it has fewer vehicles. I always took it many years ago. But once I started handling truck accident cases I stopped using it even if Waze suggests it. I do not want to be on the same road with a truck, if can I can avoid it. If you're forced to drive near a truck; give it as much space as possible. Be careful not to drive in its blind spot, and be careful when passing. Realize that trucks need far more distance to stop. Keep as much distance as you can between your vehicle and a truck in your lane behind you. If you have a choice, use roads and highways that do not allow trucks on them. And in bad weather, stay off the road if you can, and certainly stay as far away from trucks as possible. Stay Safe!
