About
Mr. Smit is known for giving clients attentive, client-first representation backed by the knowledge and courtroom experience needed to pursue their goals. He approaches every case with the understanding that listening carefully matters. By taking the time to understand each client’s concerns, he works to build a clear, realistic consensus about what to expect and how to move forward. Mr. Smit earned his Bachelor of Science in Law Enforcement Administration from Western Illinois University in 1994. He later graduated from The John Marshall Law School and was admitted to the Illinois State Bar in 1998. Since then, he has devoted his practice to family law and divorce litigation. His work includes straightforward divorces, complex financial and custody disputes, prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, judgment enforcement, pre-decree and post-decree custody and support matters, domestic violence cases, and parentage actions. Over the course of his career, Mr. Smit has handled a wide range of challenging family law matters. His experience includes negotiating child support and maintenance in high-asset cases, addressing the valuation and division of complex marital estates, and enforcing prenuptial and postnuptial agreements. He has also represented clients in difficult custody disputes, including matters involving court-appointed and independent professionals brought in to help determine the best interests of the child. Mr. Smit is a member in good standing of the Illinois State Bar Association and the DuPage County Bar Association, as well as the Family Law Sections of both organizations. He was appointed by the ISBA President to serve on the Standing Committee on Bar Services and Activities. He also gives back through the DCBA mentor-mentee program, where he serves as a mentor to a newly admitted Illinois attorney.
