About
I’m John “Johnny” Hutchens, a Criminal Defense and Family Law Associate Attorney with Powers Law Firm, PA. I was born and raised in Charlotte and attended Charlotte Latin School before heading to the University of South Carolina for my undergraduate studies. Later, I earned my law degree from Campbell University School of Law. During my time in law school, I focused on honing my writing and advocacy skills. I served as a senior staff writer for the Campbell Law Observer, where I published nineteen articles. I also excelled in mock trial competitions and worked as a Legal Research and Writing Assistant for the Honorable Allegra Collins, who is now a North Carolina Appellate Judge. After graduating, I began my legal career with a general practice law firm in the Asheville area, handling cases that included domestic disputes, criminal offenses, and other civil litigation matters. My passion for courtroom advocacy led me to join the inaugural Public Defender’s Office in Judicial District 29a, where I defended cases ranging from misdemeanors to serious felonies, gaining valuable trial experience along the way. Upon returning to Charlotte, I briefly worked with an employment law firm, assisting clients with wrongful termination claims and wage-and-hour disputes. With a diverse professional background, I bring a blend of litigation experience to help clients navigate the justice system.
