Matt Karstens is an Associate at MKFM Law who focuses primarily in the areas of domestic relations and criminal law. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois, and attended Northern Illinois University where he obtained his Juris Doctorate and Master of Business Administration through a dual degree program. While in Law School, he had the opportunity to study abroad in Agen, France in cooperation with the University of Bordeaux-Montesquieu IV. Following his graduate studies, Matt practiced law as an Assistant State’s Attorney with the Kane and Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Offices’ where he prosecuted matters ranging from traffic, misdemeanor, domestic violence, driving under the influence of alcohol, and felony matters. He gained proficiency in conditions hearings (formerly bond call), handled State extradition matters, assisted police officers in the review of felony charges, and has tried over fifteen jury trials and hundreds of bench trials and contested hearings. In addition to his extensive prosecutorial background, Matt is well versed in handling family law matters, including divorce, parentage, and post-decree issues. Matt has helped guide clients through some of the most challenging moments in any individual’s life. He approaches each case with the upmost care, respect, and attention to detail and deeply values developing a strong line of communication amongst his clients to ensure their needs are being aggressively advocated for every step of the way.
