Michael McCabe, Jr.

I am the Managing Partner of McCabe Ali LLP, with offices in Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles. I have practiced intellectual property law for over 32 years, and I am a registered patent attorney. My work focuses on the intersection of intellectual property and ethics. Over the years, I have represented hundreds of patent, trademark, and intellectual property practitioners in federal ethics investigations, sanctions matters, disciplinary trials, and various professional misconduct cases before the USPTO and state bars. I regularly consult with attorneys and law firm management on risk management, ethics compliance, and internal investigations. Additionally, I serve as a consulting or testifying expert witness on matters involving professional conduct and malpractice before state and federal tribunals. Previously, I served as the Chair of the ABA IP Section’s Professional Issues Division, and I am a faculty member for the Virginia State Bar’s mandatory Ethics and Professionalism Course for new bar members. In 2014, I launched IPethics & INsights, an award-winning law blog that addresses ethics, malpractice, and related issues within the realm of patent and trademark law. I hold a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Baltimore School of Law. Earlier in my career, I worked as an engineer at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
