Ronald C. Small

Ronald Small grew up in Ottawa, Kansas, and attended Wichita State University before earning his Juris Doctor from Washburn University School of Law. Before joining Hughes & Coleman, Ronald served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force JAG Corps and as a First Assistant Federal Public Defender. In these roles, he led complex litigation, mentored trial teams, and earned recognition as Company Grade Officer of the Year in 1995. He retired from military service in 2016. Ronald chose to focus on personal injury law because it gives him the opportunity to stand up for individuals and families during some of the most challenging times in their lives. After decades of trying complex cases and defending those without a voice, he wanted to use his skills to help injury victims secure justice and hold large insurance companies and corporations accountable for their negligence. In Tennessee, Ronald applies his extensive courtroom experience to make a direct and meaningful difference for personal injury victims. His background in federal trial work and military service sharpened his investigative, advocacy, and leadership skills—allowing him to build strong cases, negotiate effectively, and present cases before juries when needed. Ronald’s approach is rooted in standing beside clients and their families throughout the legal process. He is dedicated to ensuring they receive the help, support, and resources they need to move forward. For him, personal injury law is not only about legal work—it’s about restoring dignity, security, and hope for those he represents. Ronald is a life member of the Napier Looby Bar Association and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He served as chairman of 100 Black Men of Middle Tennessee from 2021–2023 and has been featured on the Ottawa High School Wall of Honor since 2016.
