About
To date, I have published north of 4,000 blog posts on estate planning and related topics of interest to my clients. Over the years, I have written for and been quoted in a variety of industry publications, including Trusts & Estates magazine, The National Law Journal, Lawyer's Weekly USA, Broker World, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, Kiplinger’s Retirement Report, Wealth and Retirement Planner, Inc. magazine, The Kansas City Star, Bankrate.com, The Business Journal of Kansas City, KC Small Business, Ingram's, and Money magazine. I also serve on the Editorial Review Board for the Journal of Financial Planning. I have had the opportunity to provide continuing education instruction to attorneys, accountants, and financial professionals through local, regional, and national programs. Additionally, I frequently speak on Estate Planning to diverse lay audiences. Before entering private practice, I served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps from 1984 to 1989 while stationed in West Germany. My wife, Gretchen, and I have been married since 1981, and we have three adult daughters. Outside of my professional life, I enjoy spending time with my family and contributing to my community. I serve on the Board of Elders at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and am a Certified Instructor with Walk Thru the Bible Ministries, presenting Old Testament Seminars in local churches. I also volunteer as an Attorney Advisor for Kansas City Hospice and served as a Commissioner on the Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission from 2011 to 2024. When my schedule allows, I like to escape to our family property near Mound City, Kansas, where I can be found exploring the woods or relaxing by the creek. For the record, I’m a lousy golfer.
