Alexander Herbert Butterman

My practice encompasses all aspects of trademark prosecution and proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), as well as trademark offices worldwide, where I collaborate with an extensive network of foreign associates. Since 1995, I’ve been advising a wide range of domestic and international businesses across various industries and commercial sectors. My work includes evaluating and searching for mark availability, establishing and protecting trademark and service mark rights, resolving intellectual property disputes, addressing internet domain name issues, handling anti-counterfeiting cases, managing copyright prosecution, and working on intellectual property licensing, transactions, research, and due diligence. For three years, I served as an Attorney Advisor in Law Office 106 within the USPTO’s trademark examining operations. During that time, I reviewed thousands of trademark applications related to cosmetics, toiletries, cleaning preparations, publications, office supplies, toys, sporting goods, and service marks across various industries. I also defended registration refusals in proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. I’ve been actively involved with the International Trademark Association since 2006, contributing to its various committees. Additionally, I participate in the trademark committee of the American Intellectual Property Law Association. Beyond my professional life, I enjoy spending time with my wife and children. I’m a passionate baseball fan and also love watching football, traveling, skiing, and playing golf, tennis, and other recreational sports.
