When I opened my firm 40 years ago, I did so with one simple idea: take care of the clients, and the money would take care of itself. At the time, my oldest son was just two months old. With a newborn at home, I was deeply motivated to succeed. What I am most proud of is this: in 45 years of practice and 40 years leading my firm, not once have I advised a client to do anything other than what was in their best interest. My motivation has always gone beyond professional success. I believe in treating every person with dignity and respect. I believe that all people are equal—regardless of race, creed, national origin, religion, or sexual orientation—and that each is entitled to equal treatment under the law. I also grew up a poor boy in Baltimore. For much of my life, I have been the underdog. Because of that, I identify with underdogs—they are my clients. In civil litigation, there is often profound inequality between the parties. I represent individuals. The other side represents businesses, corporations, and insurance companies. The largest insurers in the United States earn billions of dollars in profits annually. My fight—for my clients and for the clients of our firm—is the equalizer. That is why I do what I do. The cases I want to handle involve people who are honest, hardworking, and credible. There are personal injury lawyers who acquire cases to settle. That is not my practice. I represent people who, through no fault of their own, have suffered life-changing injuries—people whose passion, livelihood, or way of life has been taken from them by the negligence of others. My goal is to obtain the fullest measure of compensation possible to offset that loss. At times, what we can recover is limited by available insurance coverage. At times, jurisdictional rules create barriers to full compensation. But one promise remains constant: I will do everything in my power to achieve the maximum recovery the law allows.
